Dave's tips for Charleston visitors

Welcome to Charleston, South Carolina

I hope you enjoy your stay in Charleston! I grew up in South Jersey, but I've lived here since 1985 and have come to think of Charleston as my home.

Often, folks ask me for tips about things to do here. I don't go out much. In our family, when it's your birthday, you get to pick the restaurant. I usually pick Outback or Longhorn Steakhouse.

Chances are good your tastes are far more adventurous than mine. I frequently update the list of links below to bring you the latest restaurant news and reviews as well as stories about other things to do while you are in Charleston.

NOTE: Most of the stories linked below are only accessible to subscribers of The Post and Courier, Charleston's daily metro newspaper. If you plan to visit Charleston, consider subscribing to the newspaper for $12.99 per month, as it is the most reliable source for news and feature stories about the city.  You can always cancel your subscription when you go home. TV AND MOVIE FILMING LOCATIONS IN CHARLESTON

BEST CHARLESTON EXPERIENCE

Folks in town for a short visit often ask, "What's the one thing you recommend that we do while we're here?"

I always say, "Take a carriage tour."

It's a great way to see the historic district and learn more about Charleston. The tour guides are knowledgeable and entertaining, and the horses and mules are well-treated. The city's charm will unfold slowly as the tour progresses.

Here is my favorite carriage tour company.

A BIT OF HISTORY

This charming city is steeped in history, with a rich culture and vibrant arts scene. Whether you're interested in learning about the city's past, exploring its many museums and galleries, or simply enjoying its beautiful scenery, you're sure to find something to love in Charleston.

Here are a few highlights of Charleston's history:

Note: The text above was composed by Google's AI interface, Bard, on May 4, 2023. The prompt was: "Write a paragraph welcoming visitors to Charleston, SC, highlighting its history." Not a bad job.

Several riders have asked about my playlist. It has about 36 hours of music I love, mostly classic rock.

Whenever I want someone else to pick out the music, I listen to Radio Paradise. This listener-supported, streaming music station plays an eclectic mix, heavy on the classic rock. You can download players for iPhone or Android phones, or listen online at RadioParadise.com.

I also enjoy listening to contemporary Christian music. My favorite Christian radio station is HisRadio, which is over the air in Charleston at 100.5 FM.

My favorite story

When people hear that I am a retired newspaper writer, they often ask which stories mean the most to me. I spent some time on the crime beat, and there were many interesting stories. I also enjoyed writing feature stories, but the most meaningful story for me was one I got to write twice.

Both examined the most critical question in life: Did Jesus Christ rise from the dead?

Both were published on Easter Sunday. The first was in 1988, less than two years after I started working at The Post and Courier. The second was in 2017, more than a year after I retired. I wrote the 2017 story as a freelancer.

I invite you to read at least one of them.
